FRENCH LANGUAGE CLASSES LAUNCHED AT AIM

If you hear some student behind you say “ Bonjour Madame !” in the corridors or in the stairway, you will automatically think that it must be one of the French students on the Student Exchange Program with IDRAC ( School of Business Management in Lyon, France with whom our institute has a tie-up), but then when you glance back, you will be pleasantly surprised to see one of your own PGDM students smiling at you, and you will ask yourself: “ how come he/she is speaking French? ”.

Well, don’t be surprised! AIM has launched French Language classes for all PGDM students as from 25th August 2008. At present, we have approximately 150 students who have postulated for the French Language classes, and some 50 students have been selected for same. The courses are held in the morning from 8.15 to 9.25 am four times a week, in small batches of 25 students so as to encourage maximum interaction between students and trainer. The trainer is a Native French Speaker who has lived in France for 2 ½ years, and has been teaching French in various institutions and organizations. She is passionate about her subject and has transmitted this passion to her students.

What do we learn in French classes? Well, not only French language! We also learn about French culture, which is a must to have a global picture of this new and lyrical language. One cannot learn French in a vacuum. One must have the knowledge of French history, geography, cuisine, fashion, fine arts, political & legal system, etc. which we regroup as French Culture so that our understanding of the language and its people is complete. Moreover, since our aim is to become Global Managers, we also learn inter-cultural differences about work and business etiquette in France and India, so that tomorrow if we have a French boss, or work for a French company, we can integrate more easily and our adjustment will be smoother and more efficient.

As far as evaluation is concerned, there will be internal written and spoken tests as well as assessment on teamwork through projects carried out throughout the course. However, we are preparing the students to take the DELF/A1 examinations, which is an international examination in French Language by the Government of France and conducted through the Alliance Française of Delhi at the end of the 6 months course. The registration charges for the external examinations are nominal.

How does this course specifically benefit AIM students? Well, more French companies are coming to India than before, and in various fields, from luxury goods to manufacture of electronic equipment for the military. Therefore, students having a working knowledge of French on their resume have an edge over their competitors. Moreover, Aim has an excellent Student Exchange Program with IDRAC, one of the top French School of Management in Lyon, France and those following the course will definitely benefit as they will have the basic language and cultural skills they will need to survive in France during the exchange program. And they also get to interact with the French students who are here on the exchange program in their native language, and improve their spoken skills in French at the same time. The enthusiasm of the students learning French is commendable.
