CAT vs XAT: Which Exam Gives You Better PGDM Admission Opportunities?
Posted on 13 Oct 2026
By Dr. Vikas Gupta
Introduction
CAT vs XAT has no universal winner, because the better exam is the one your shortlisted colleges accept: CAT opens the 22 IIMs, XAT opens XLRI and other participating institutes, and the PGDM at Asia-Pacific Institute of Management (AIM) takes either score. Timing adds a second layer this year. CAT 2026 is on 29 November 2026 and its registration has closed, while XAT 2027 registration stays open until 6 December 2026, at the time of writing.
This guide compares the two tests on pattern, difficulty, marking and the admission options each score opens. It is written for final-year students, interns and early-career candidates deciding where to spend their preparation hours.

CAT is run by one of the IIMs on a rotating basis (IIM Indore for CAT 2026), while XAT is run by XLRI Jamshedpur, and the CAT XAT difference shows most in length and structure. CAT lasts two hours with three sections. XAT lasts three hours and adds Decision Making and a separate General Knowledge part.

Both tests are computer-based, yet they reward different habits. CAT punishes a slow start because unused time in a section cannot be carried forward. XAT lets you move between sections and asks for judgement on cases that have no formula, so a candidate who dislikes a fixed clock may find it friendlier.
XAT vs CAT difficulty has no official ranking, and published comparisons split: some rate XAT slightly harder overall, while others name CAT's Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning (DILR) sets as the toughest section in either test. Treat every such ranking as an opinion from a coaching portal.
Why CAT Feels Hard
CAT's pressure comes from the clock. Each of its three sections gets exactly 40 minutes, and DILR sets are widely described as unpredictable. CAT 2025 had about 68 questions (24 in VARC, 22 each in DILR and QA), according to third-party media reports, which leaves under two minutes per question.
Why XAT Feels Hard
XAT's pressure comes from length and ambiguity. Its Part 1 gives 170 minutes for 75 questions, roughly 2.3 minutes each, which is more generous than CAT. The strain is three hours of concentration and Decision Making cases where several options look reasonable.
Your temperament should break the tie. If sectional clocks make you freeze, XAT's open order may suit you. If long tests drain you, CAT's compact two hours may be the safer bet.
How Do the Marking Schemes Change Your Attempt Strategy?
A blind guess pays off in CAT only when your chance of being right exceeds 25 per cent, and in XAT only when it exceeds 20 per cent, based on each exam's published marking. The arithmetic is simple: CAT gives +3 and -1 on MCQs, XAT gives +1 and -0.25.
XAT adds a skip rule. You may leave up to eight questions unanswered without penalty, after which each skipped question costs 0.1 marks, so the break-even point for a guess drops to roughly 12 per cent. Non-MCQ answers in CAT carry no negative marking, and XAT's General Knowledge part has none either, so attempt both fully.
In practice, elimination matters more than luck. Cutting four options down to two lifts your odds to 50 per cent, well above either threshold. Use your mocks to learn which question types let you eliminate quickly and which do not.
CAT opens all 22 IIMs plus a list of non-IIM institutes published on the official CAT website, while XAT opens XLRI and the institutes that participate in it.
Neither score is an admission offer. XLRI's FAQ says each participating institute runs its own selection, and the CAT information bulletin adds that the IIMs have no role in how non-IIM institutes choose students. Later stages such as group discussions and interviews vary by institute.
Count colleges before you count reputations. A candidate aiming at an IIM must take CAT, and one aiming at XLRI must take XAT. For a PGDM shortlist built from institutes that accept several exams, whichever percentile is higher does more work than the brand of the test. Writing both is realistic, since this cycle's exams fall five weeks apart.
CAT or XAT: Which Should You Take?
Take CAT if your shortlist includes any IIM, take XAT if it includes XLRI, and consider both if most of your list accepts either. Follow these steps to settle it:
List every institute you would join, with the entrance exams its admission page accepts.
Mark the exclusive ones: IIMs need CAT, XLRI needs XAT.
Check the calendar. CAT registration has closed, XAT registration is open, and XAT is held on 3 January 2027.
Attempt one full mock of each pattern and compare accuracy and stamina as well as raw scores.
Register for the exam that fits, and start group discussion and interview practice alongside it.
Coaching portals note that the two syllabi overlap heavily, so a CAT candidate usually adds only Decision Making and General Knowledge for XAT. That overlap makes a second exam cheaper than it looks, and it gives a candidate with an interrupted CAT plan a realistic recovery route.
How Does AIM Treat CAT and XAT Scores for PGDM Admission?
Asia-Pacific Institute of Management (AIM), New Delhi, accepts a valid score in any one of CAT, XAT, CMAT, MAT, GMAT or ATMA, so either exam meets its entrance-test requirement. Applicants also need a bachelor's degree with at least 50% marks, and final-year students may apply.
Shortlisted candidates take a group discussion and personal interview, and performance there, together with entrance scores and academic records, decides the final shortlist. The admission page lists no minimum percentile for any accepted exam, so ask the admission cell if you want specifics.
The PGDM is a two-year, full-time, AICTE-approved programme in six trimesters, with four pathways: General, Marketing, Banking & Financial Services and Big Data Analytics. Admissions for 2027–29 are shown as open at the time of writing. XAT registration is separate from an AIM application, so a candidate who missed CAT 2026 still needs to apply to AIM on its own.
CAT vs XAT is a shortlist question before it is a difficulty question. CAT is the only route into the IIMs, XAT is the route into XLRI, and PGDM institutes such as AIM accept both. With CAT 2026 registration closed and XAT 2027 still open at the time of writing, candidates without a CAT attempt this year can still prepare for XAT and apply. Confirm dates and eligibility on xatonline.in and iimcat.ac.in, and read each college's admission page before paying any fee.

These answers cover practical doubts about CAT vs XAT, from attempting both exams to scores, results and eligibility for PGDM admission.
01.
CAT vs XAT: which is better for PGDM admission?
Neither is better by default. For institutes that accept both, the higher percentile helps more than the exam name, while IIM seats need CAT and XLRI seats need XAT. Build your shortlist first, then pick the test that most of those colleges accept.
02.
Is XAT easier than CAT?
No official source says so. Candidates who read quickly and handle ethical cases calmly often find XAT comfortable, while those strong in puzzles and short sectional bursts lean towards CAT. Your own mock scores in both patterns are the only reliable guide.
03.
Can I appear for both CAT and XAT in the same year?
Yes, they are separate exams with separate registrations and different conducting bodies. Many candidates write both because the dates fall about five weeks apart. Check each registration window early, since CAT closes well before XAT does.
04.
Does the XAT General Knowledge section count towards the percentile?
No. Published summaries based on XLRI’s information say the General Knowledge part is scored separately and has no negative marking. Some institutes may still look at it later, so attempt every question, but give your main preparation time to the three scored sections.
05.
Can I get into a PGDM programme without a CAT score?
Yes, if the institute accepts other exams. AIM, for example, lets applicants submit an XAT, CMAT, MAT, GMAT or ATMA score in place of CAT. Always read the programme’s current admission page, because accepted exams differ between institutes.
06.
What should I do if I missed CAT registration?
Check whether XAT registration is still open, and confirm eligibility on the official XAT website. Then shortlist PGDM institutes that accept XAT, since exam registration is separate from college applications. Prepare for group discussions and interviews while you study.
07.
Can a lower percentile still lead to a PGDM seat?
Sometimes, but never with a guarantee. Outcomes depend on each institute’s cut-off, seat count and applicant pool. At AIM, selection also draws on academic records and the group discussion and interview, so strengthening those stages helps.
08.
Which result arrives first, CAT or XAT?
CAT 2026 results are expected in the first week of January 2027, while XAT results usually follow about three weeks after the 3 January exam. Both dates can shift, so watch the official websites rather than coaching portals for the announcement.
