Frequently Asked Questions

These FAQs answer common questions about the XAT 2027 exam pattern, from section-wise questions to marking, GK and how an XAT score connects to PGDM admission.

01. What is the XAT 2027 exam pattern?

XAT 2027 is a three-hour test of about 95 multiple-choice questions. Part 1 has Verbal and Logical Ability (26), Decision Making (21) and Quantitative Aptitude and Data Interpretation (28), taken in 170 minutes. Part 2 is General Knowledge with 20 questions in 10 minutes. The exam is scheduled for 3 January 2027, 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM.

02. How many questions are there in each of the XAT exam sections?

The expected split is 26 questions in Verbal Ability and Logical Reasoning, 21 in Decision Making, 28 in Quantitative Aptitude and Data Interpretation, and 20 in General Knowledge, totalling 95. XLRI shows these numbers as approximate, so confirm them in the official information bulletin before the exam.

03. What is the XAT marking scheme?

Each question carries one mark, and each incorrect answer costs 0.25 marks. You may skip up to eight questions without penalty, with 0.1 marks deducted for each skipped question after that. General Knowledge has no negative marking. Check the information bulletin for how these rules apply across parts.

04. Does XAT penalise unattempted questions?

Yes, but only beyond a limit. XLRI’s website says candidates can skip up to eight questions without penalty. Each skipped question after the eighth carries a deduction of 0.1 marks. That is lower than the 0.25 deduction for a wrong answer, so decide each case on how confident you are.

05. Does the GK score count in the XAT percentile?

No. XLRI states that General Knowledge has no negative marking and does not contribute to the overall percentile or cutoff score. It is considered in selection only for XLRI programmes. Other institutes set their own criteria, so check each college’s admission page.

06. Are there sectional time limits in XAT 2027?

No. XLRI’s website lists no sectional time limits, and candidates can attempt sections in their preferred order and switch between them. The 170 minutes cover Verbal and Logical Ability, Decision Making, and Quantitative Aptitude and Data Interpretation together. General Knowledge is timed separately at 10 minutes.

07. How should I prepare for XAT decision making?

Practise reading scenarios for stakeholders, constraints and ethics, then choose the option that solves the core problem without creating a new one. Use XLRI’s past papers for timed practice, and review why the best option beat the runner-up. Keep an error log to spot repeated mistakes.

08. Can I use my XAT score for PGDM admission at AIM?

AIM’s PGDM – General page lists XAT among accepted scores, alongside CAT, MAT, CMAT, ATMA and GMAT, followed by a group discussion and personal interview. Applicants need a bachelor’s degree with at least 50% marks, and final-year students may apply. Verify current requirements on the official programme page before applying.
