Frequently Asked Questions

These answers cover MAT score vs percentile, from how colleges use each number to retakes, validity and applying to PGDM programmes.

01. MAT score vs percentile: which do colleges look at?

Many colleges shortlist on percentile, though the scorecard shows both numbers and some institutes check the composite or sections too. Each institute publishes its own criteria, so confirm what your target colleges use before judging a result as strong or weak.

02. Does MAT give an all-India rank?

No. AIMA reports a composite score and a percentile on the scorecard and does not publish an all-India rank or merit list. Colleges use the percentile to compare candidates across sessions and modes.

03. Is 80 percentile good in MAT?

It depends on your list. One portal treats 80 percentile as good for top MAT-accepting institutes, while others suggest higher. Compare your percentile with each institute’s published criteria and keep a mix of reach, realistic and safe options.

04. Does the fifth section count in the MAT percentile?

No. The fifth section is scored and shown on the scorecard, but the composite and overall percentile use only the four sections of 30 questions each. Spend your preparation time accordingly.

05. How long is a MAT score valid?

One year, according to AIMA’s official FAQ as reported in September 2026. Institutes may apply their own rules on which session they accept, so check each college’s admission notice before applying with an older score.

06. Can I take MAT more than once in a year?

Yes. AIMA runs sessions in February, May, September and December, and candidates register for each separately. Colleges differ on how they treat multiple scores, so ask target institutes whether they consider your best result.

07. Does negative marking affect my percentile?

Yes, indirectly. Each wrong answer costs 0.25 marks, so a guess pays off only when your chance of being right exceeds 20 per cent. Eliminating options before guessing protects your composite and therefore your percentile.

08. Can I apply to AIM's PGDM with a MAT score?

Yes. AIM accepts MAT alongside CAT, XAT, CMAT, GMAT and ATMA, and expects a bachelor’s degree with at least 50% marks. Selection includes a group discussion and personal interview. Confirm current requirements on the official admission page.
